Four
time Group I winner Kingman, the leading three year-old miler in Europe this
year, has been retired and will join Frankel at Banstead Manor at the end of
the year.
The brilliant son of Invincible Spirit had been suffering from a throat
infection that would have kept him from competing in the Group I Queen Elizabeth
II Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day and while consideration was given to the Breeders
Cup Mile, it was eventually decided retirement was the best option.
"He is still undergoing treatment which would have precluded him running
in the QEII and anything else would have all been a rush," said his trainer John
Gosden.
"We were all looking forward to running him at Ascot so yes it is
frustrating but from the point of view of what he has achieved it is not at all
frustrating. He was a long way the most exciting colt I have ever
trained."
A homebred for Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, Kingman will go to stud with
the almost perfect record of seven wins from eight starts, his lone defeat
coming in the Group I English Two Thousand Guineas when narrowly beaten into
second by Night of Thunder.
Arguably the best of 80 stakes-winners by his sire Invincible Spirit, Kingman
is a half-brother to Group III winner Remote from Group I winner Zenda, a
half-sister by Zamindar to Group I winner and leading sire Oasis Dream.
A fee for Kingman will be announced in due course.
