Bernardini Colt Stakes Claim for Derby
Mark Smith - Wednesday, 24 October 2012

Darley Stud's highly regarded young stallion Bernardini (USA) sired his second stakes-winner in Australia when the Darley homebred Solemn captured Wednesday's $120,000 Listed Geelong Classic (2200m).

Settled at the rear of the field by Kerrin McEvoy, Solemn came with a barnstorming finish to defeat Malabar Man (Any Given Saturday) by 1-1/4 lengths with Escado (Casino Pronce) a neck back in third.

The 3yo colt had won just once in 7 starts in Sydney, a 1500 metres maiden at Hawkesbury on September 27.

"He's always a horse we've thought a fair bit of and the Derby's a race we've always had in mind but my opinion is he's probably six months away from where he should be," trainer Peter Snowden said.

"The task for us is to get him back up in 10 days which I think is going to be a very good Derby this year. There's that colt [It's A Dundeel] of [Murray] Baker's. He's a very smart horse.

"He'll [Solemn] be the best judge of that. He'll be the barometer as to whether we go to the Derby with him or whether we pull the pin on him."

Solemn is the first foal of the Sydney winning Galileo mare Mead who was a $260,000 Easter Yearling sale purchase by Woodlands Stud in 2005.

Mead is a daughter of multiple Listed stakes winner Terevega (Laranto) a sister to Australasian Oaks (G1) winner La Volta.

Mead has a 2yo filly by Commands named Sima a yearling filly by Bernardini (USA). She was covered by Exceed And Excel last year.

The sire of the North American Grade 1 winners To Honour And Serve and Stay Thirsty, Bernardini is also represented in Australia by the Listed stakes-winner Bobin.

He is covering his fifth book of mares at Darley Stud, Kelvinside this spring for a fee of $55,000.
