It's
not easy to break your maiden in a stakes race, but Redoute's Choice filly Alzora
achieved the feat when powering home to win the Listed MRC Ethereal Stakes at
Caulfield on Saturday.
Unloved by punters, the David Hayes trained Alzora was having her ninth race
start in the 2000 metre staying test and few expected her to break the ice.
Well ridden by Nicholas Hall, she ran out the trip strongly to win by three-quarters
of a length over lightly raced Summerbliss, who was having just her second
start after an impressive maiden win.
Both fillies are entered for the Group I VRC Oaks at Flemington on November 8,
so a rematch seems inevitable.
A $115,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of Emirates Park for Mark Pilkington
Bloodstock, Alzora is raced by Robert Crabtree's Dorrington Farm and is the
best of five winners from the Gulch mare Bryce Canyon (USA).
Bryce Canyon was unplaced, but her dam Bineyah offers a clue to the staying
promise of Alzora as she is a Group I placed daughter of Sadler Wells and was second
in the Yorkshire Oaks and fourth in the Irish Oaks.
Bryce Canyon has a yearling filly by Mutawaajid, but no foal this spring having
missed last season.
Alzora is the 94th stakes-winner for Arrowfield heavyweight Redoute's Choice(pictured), who is
closing in on his century of stakes-winners.
