Southern Cross Metro Double
Tara Madgwick - Monday, 1 October 2012

October 1 – Southern Cross Breeders is always a well-known vendor at the yearling sales and two of their graduates saluted at Randwick on the holiday Monday in Merlin Mustang and Elusive Lad.

Promising four year-old Merlin Mustang returned to top form at his second run back from a spell, scoring a nose win in the Benchmark 80 event over 1550 metres.

Now trained by Mick Tubman, having previously been prepared at Gundagai by Michael Murphy, Merlin Mustang looks set for a good campaign and has the overall record of five wins from 12 starts with prizemoney in excess of $150,000.

Merlin Mustang has proven a great investment, the talented gelding purchased for just $12,000 from the Southern Cross Breeders draft at the 2010 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Merlin Mustang is the first winner for Octagonal mare Petulant Moments, a half-sister to stakes-placed Chosen to Fly from the family of Group I winner Mr Innocent.

Also successful earlier in the day was seven year-old Elusive Quality (USA) gelding Elusive Lad(pictured as a yearling) , a $35,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Southern Cross draft.

Now trained by Terry Robinson, Elusive Lad seems to have found a new lease on life following a very long spell of more than a year and has had three starts for his new trainer for two wins and a second.

He took the restricted event over 1000 metres by a short neck and has the overall record of five wins and six placings from 22 starts with prizemoney nearing $90,000.

Bred by Flame Tree Stud, Elusive Lad is the best of four winners from stakes-winner Little Pattie.

Southern Cross Breeders will be selling at all the major sales in 2013.
