Commands Strikes Again
Mark Smith - Saturday, 29 September 2012

No stallion has made a quicker start to the new season than Commands and the son of Danehill was in the spotlight again on Saturday courtesy of the Darley homebred Proverb in the $100,000 Listed Bacardi - No 1 Rum Dulcify Quality (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Last week Commands son Lamarsery won the Group 2 Hill stakes at Randwick, two weeks ago Commands had a Stakes double at Rosehill with Epaulette powering home in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose and Ambidexter capturing the Group 2 Theo Marks stakes.

Proverb is a close relation of Ambidexter whose dam Dextrous (Quest For Fame) is a halfister to Proverb's dam More Haste (Brief Truce).

Proverb may miss next Saturday's Spring Champion Stakes if Peter Snowden gets his way.

"I don't like to make calls on race-day especially straight after a race but for me it's unlikely," Snowden said.

"I think there might be better options in Melbourne later on in the carnival."

"I think he might be a Carbine Club, Sandown Guineas horse," he said.

"For mine, I think he's better out the back, quiet, mile, good solid pace, pop out and have one run at them."

The odds on favourite, Proverb had a length of the straight battle with second favourite Indianapolis with just a short-half-head separating them on the line.

"He travelled really well, the tempo slackened off midrace, that wind out there is playing its part. It's really strong down the side," winning rider Kerrin McEvoy said.

"He's probably looking for a drier track this fella I reckon.

"It's riding on the slow side out there today and when I let him off the bridle he didn't really enjoy that ground in the straight.

"I reckon back on top of the ground you would have seen him finish even better."

The Darley homebred is the fifth foal of the stakes-placed Brief Truce mare More Haste a half-sister to Sandown Guineas winner Dextrous the dam of recent Group II winner Ambidextrous and Champagne Stakes(G1) winner Skilled (Commands) who is currently covering his first book of mares at Darley's Victorian property.

More Haste has a 2yo colt by Nadeem named Rapid and a yearling filly by Commands.

She was bred back to Epsom Derby hero Authorized last season.
