Less than 24 hours after Pierro cruised to victory in the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley, the Waterhouse stables 'other champion' More Joyous earned her 20th stakes win in Saturday's Group III Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.
With Nash Rawiller sitting quiet, the daughter of More Than
Ready (USA) was barely out of second gear against four overmatched opponents.
Because Rawiller cannot make Pierro's weight in the Cox Plate he is committed to ride the champion mare in the weight-for-age championship.
"I thought to myself at the 100 (metres) I better make her do a bit because I don't want the other horse (Pierro) fitter than us (in the Cox Plate)," Rawiller said.
"I'm very happy with where I'm situated. She's been amazing to me for the last four or five years."
"Next year it would be a tough one but at this point time I'm more than happy to be on the great mare."
Trainer Gai Waterhouse said More Joyous would have one more
start before the Cox Plate.
"It was just a working gallop. She's just joyous," Waterhouse said.
"Off to the (Group I) Toorak (Handicap 1600m)."
A homebred for John Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud, More Joyous takes her overall record to 21 wins and 2 thirds from 28 starts for earnings of $4,472,450.
She is the second foal of the AJC Oaks heroine Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence), who has a 2yo sister to More Joyous named Most Joyful who is a possible starter in next Saturday's Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick.
After missing to More Than Ready (USA) in 2010, Sunday Joy foaled another filly to the Vinery stallion August 11.
