The Gwenda Markwell-trained Rolling Pin earned his first stakes victory at Newcastle's Broadmeadow racetrack on Wednesday when leading all the way the $150,000 Group III Patinack Farm Cameron Handicap (1500m).
Ridden by Christian Reith, Rolling Pin held the challenge of the fast-finishing Lighinthenite by a half-neck with the Peter Snowden-trained Offenders a length back in third.
The 5yo gelding had failed in his
two starts since placing behind Pinwheel in the Group 3 Missile Stakes August
11.
"It wasn't the plan to lead but he wanted to fight me a little bit early so I gave him a bit of rein, got him to relax, got him into stride and he just felt fantastic," Reith told Sky Racing World.
"It was a tough race today and all credit to Gwenda, her staff and the horse. He turned up in tip top order.
"He's always shown ability this horse and it's good to see him pick up one of these good races."
A $60,000 purchase at the 2009 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling sale, Rolling Pin takes his overall record to 7 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds from 22 starts for earnings of $282,250.
He becomes the 45thstakes-winner for Waikato Stud's Pins (Snippets).
Rolling Pin is the fifth foal of the multiple stakes-winning Mi Preferido mare Gypsy's Daughter who made three starts at the Sydney Autumn Carnival in 2000 winning the Neville Sellwood Stakes (LR) and The Lord Mayor's Cup (LR).
Gypsy's Daughter has a 2yo coly by Sakhee's Secret and was covered last year by Mastercraftsman (IRE) after missing to Pentire (GB) the previous season
