Minor Leaguers with Major League Aspirations
Tara Madgwick - Sunday, 9 September 2012

If Flemington on Saturday was the 'major leagues', then the provincial meeting at Newcastle was a very much 'minor leagues', but a couple of winners on that program would no doubt be harbouring serious spring aspirations.

First to salute was the Gai Waterhouse trained colt King of Olympia, who bounced back from an unplaced debut behind exciting prospect It's a Dundeel to score a dominant win in the 1400 metre maiden as a well backed favourite.

The three year-old son of champion sire Encosta de Lago is entered for all the big races this spring, so connections will be relieved to see him back on track with this encouraging display.

King of Olympia (pictured as a yearling)  was the most expensive yearling by his sire sold in 2011, fetching $800,000 for Coolmore when knocked down to Demi O'Byrne and James Bester Bloodstock at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

He runs for a syndicate of investors that includes Coolmore and is the second winner for stakes-winning Danero mare Pinezero, who comes from the family of Group II winner Schubert.

Scoring in the very next race was the Bart Cummings trained Starcraft colt Lunar Rise, who put nearly five lengths on his rivals to win the 1500 metre Class One event in a breeze.

Entered for the Group I ATC Spring Champion Stakes, Lunar Rise has now won his past two starts and will no doubt be heading back to town for some of the longer three year-old stakes races now that he has struck form.

Lunar Rise was bought by DGR Thoroughbreds for $380,000 from the Arrowfield draft at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale making him the most expensive yearling by his sire sold in that year.

He is the first winner for blue-blooded Sadler's Wells mare Spirited Dancer (IRE), a half-sister to Group II winner Peinture Bleue, the dam of champion racehorse and successful sire Peintre Celebre (USA).

Arrowfield Stud will be cheering on Lunar Rise given that his dam is due to foal to Starcraft again this spring.
