Stakes-placed four times, super-consistent 5yo gelding Cavallo Pazzo finally had his moment in the sun at Belmont on Saturday when he came from back in the field to claim the Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m).
Ridden by apprentice Kyra Yuill for Ascot based trainer Ted Martinovich, Cavallo Pazzo stormed home to defeat Gum Nut Guru (Verglas) by one and a quarter lengths with Our Ol' Fella (Halo Homewrecker) a half length back in third.
"He's been a good horse to us and to win a race like this is a real good thrill," Martinovich said.
"Every time he has had a bit of a break and come back he's actually improved a bit and that's what they've got to do to go to this level and fortunately that's what he's done today."
It takes the
overall record of Cavallo Pazzo to 7 wins, 8 seconds and 3 thirds from 25
starts for earnings of $339,255.
A $22,000 purchase at the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling sale, Cavallo Pazzo is the fifth foal of the 4-time winner Annuity (Euclase) a half-sister to the top-class filly Aragen (Rory's Jester). Winner of the QTC Sires Produce Stakes (G1) and AJC Silver Shadow Stakes (G2), Aragen's life was cruelly cut short in the 1996Australasian Oaks (G1).
Cavallo Pazzo becomes the tenth stakes-winner for Arrowfield Stud's Not a Single Doubt (pictured) who covered 180 mares last season at a fee of $24,750.
The son of Redoute's Choice remains at that fee this spring.
