The Patinack Farm brand was carried to victory in the Group III VRC Aurie's Star Handicap at Flemington on Saturday, but ironically the horse in question was not sporting the Patinack Farm colours.
Four year-old Elvstroem entire Shanghai Warrior scored his first Black Type success, travelling beautifully in third spot for Steven King before surging to the line to beat race favourite Golden Archer by a length in the 1200 metre sprint.
The talented chestnut has been coaxed patiently through the grades by veteran trainer and former leading jockey Pat Hyland, who rides Shanghai Warrior (pictured Racepix Vic) in all his work.
"This horse has got some real ability," Hyland said.
"You'll see the best of him a bit later on when he gets over more ground. These are just the preliminaries.
"I ride him in all his work and I'll keep doing it.
"All my good horses I ride myself and I picked this one out as a good one a long time ago."
Shanghai Warrior is being set for the Group I MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in late September and before then he would most likely stick to the straight six track at Flemington.
"He won't go around a corner until then, but it won't be a problem," Hyland added.
Shanghai Warrior was purchased for $105,000 by his trainer from the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and was a successful pinhook for Supreme Thoroughbreds, who purchased him originally from the Patinack Farm draft at the 2009 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $68,000.
Shanghai Warrior is the seventh stakes-winner for Blue Gum Farm based Elvstroem and has the overall record of five wins and three placings from nine starts with prizemoney of $224,213.
He was bred by Patinack Farm in partnership with the Mackinnon Discretionary Trust and is the best of six winners produced by Rory's Jester mare Emily Blue, who comes from the family of Group I winner Drought.
Emily Blue died in 2010 and had only one other foal for Patinack Farm, a three year-old filly by Casino Prince called Illuminism, who placed last season at two.
Group 3 - 1200m Class: Open. Track: Slow. Time: 1:11.40. Sectional Time: 0:34.56 at 600m. Prizemoney: $150,000 - 1st: $90,000 2nd: $27,000 3rd: $13,500. |
