Anomaly or Changing of the Guard?
Tara Madgwick - Thursday, 2 August 2012

The leading Australian sire lists for 2011/2012 have come in for much consideration and analysis in the last few days and one that offers much food for thought is the Leading Broodmare Sire list which was topped for the first time by Zabeel, who also claimed the title for the first time in New Zealand.

Cambridge Stud's 26 year-old stalwart (pictured) sired the dams of 192 winners of $12.5 million in prizemoney headed by 14 stakes-winners, his achievement remarkable in that he dethroned the legendary Danehill (USA)( died in 2003), who had held the title for the past six seasons in succession.

A breed shaping sire, Danehill first dominated the leading sire list in his own right before handing up the baton to his myriad of sire sons, while his daughters ensured his rapid progress up the broodmare sire list.

Whatever way you look at it, Danehill has completely changed the face of the Australian breeding industry and his influence creeps into every corner of what we do.

A pedigree is seen as either having Danehill blood or being an outcross that can possibly be improved by Danehill blood.

Either way, his name is a factor in the majority of breeding decisions made in this country.

A champion sire in his own right, Zabeel is a logical outcross and his ability to work with the Danehill blood through his daughters has no doubt helped propelled him to his first Australian Champion Broodmare Sire title, yet surprisingly the majority of his stakes-winners are actually sired by representatives of various sirelines (albeit mostly Northern Dancer) with the notable exception being freakishly good filly Atlantic Jewel, who is by Danehill's champion son Fastnet Rock.

A big mover on the Broodmare Sire List and a horse that will probably top it at some point in the future is Flying Spur, who has just turned 20 and has shown a real affinity with More Than Ready (USA). It's a cross that has been tried extensively in the wake of Sebring, who won the Golden Slipper in 2008, and is one that is yielding some impressive results.
