When a two year-old wins by 10 lengths it's going to get people talking, particularly when he's a half-brother to a champion sprinter in Sepoy.
In the opening event at Sandown on Sunday, two year-old colt Mulaazem jumped out of the ground to produce an eye-catching performance in the 1300 metre open juvenile event.
The Peter Moody trained colt finished second on debut at Echuca at the start of the month and was easy in betting for this tougher assignment, but proved a class above his hapless rivals.
Sporting winkers for the first time, the powerful chestnut jumped well for Vlad Duric and cruised along in second place before dropping the rest of the field cold in the straight when he found top gear.
A son of underperforming shuttle sire Dubai Destination (USA), Mulaazem zoomed to the line, revelling in the heavy ground to win as he pleased.
"Even going around to the start, he cantered around nice on the ground." Vlad Duric said. "I was confident but when you let them off the bridle, it's a different ball game.
"He just travelled like he was on top of the ground. We had a really nice run outside the leader and he never faltered in his stride and he handled the ground very well."
A homebred for Emirates Park, Mulaazem is the third winner from three foals to race from the Danehill (USA) mare Watchful, who was purchased by Emirates for just $55,000 from a reduction of Darley mares at the 2009 Inglis Broodmare Sale.
She was carrying Mulaazem at the time and Sepoy had yet to show his hand, so what a good buy she has turned out to be!
Within less than 12 months of her sale, Sepoy (pictured Taron Clark) ) had established himself as the best two year-old in the country with wins in the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond, the son of Elusive Quality (USA) set to stand his first season at Darley this spring at a fee of $66,000.
Watchful produced a filly by Domesday for Emirates Park last year and is due to foal to Lonhro later in the spring.
