Kambula Stud recently had the misfortune to lose its grand old stalwart Blevic and results from around Australia on Saturday show just how sorely he will be missed.
Shortly after his 2yo filly Little Less Lip made a winning career debut over 1050 metres at Morphettville, the 6yo Blevic gelding Glaneuse made it back to back wins in the Listed TROA/Luxbet Winter Championship Final (1600m) at Flemington.
Trained at Mount Gambier by Michael O'Leary and ridden again by Linda Meech, Glaneuse came with a well-timed run down the middle of the track to inch out a stubborn Galileo's Gold (Galileo) by half a head with There's Only One (Testa Rossa) a head back in third.
Glaneuse takes his overall record to 11 wins, 5 seconds and 2 thirds from 34 starts for earnings of $412,868.
Winning
rider Linda Meech said the gelding was always travelling like a winner but felt
his weight anchored him over the concluding stages.
"I was confident because Mick told me he had him set for this race and he's a really good trainer," Meech said. "When he tells me he has got it all planned, they normally come to fruition.
"The big weight held him back the last little bit but all credit to the horse. He really dug deep when he had to."
Winner of the 1994 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes (G1) at two and the VRC Derby (G1) at thee, Blevic (pictured) stood at Kambula Stud for 16 seasons before he was humanely euthanized after complications following colic surgery in June.
From the family of Blue Diamond Stakes (G1) winner Let's Get Physical, Glaneuse is the first foal of the Export Price mare Qu'Appelle a half-sister to Multiple city winner Rustic Sal.
Qu'Appelle has a yearling full brother to Glaneuse. She was not covered in 2010 and was bred back to Domesday last year.
