The Class of 09 - who's had the most fun?
Craig Tompson - Thursday, 5 July 2012

Most people who buy a yearling do so in the hope of "having some fun", so with the Class of 2009 about to turn five we thought it'd be worth having a look at who's had the most fun.

By now most owners that bought a yearling in 2009 know their fate, whether they've bought a champion, a winner or a walker, and the list of the top 50 horses based on profit makes for interesting, even inspiring reading.

Now it's not a perfect list of profitability, that has to be stated up front.

There's been no account taken on exchange rate in NZ dollars, so in fact the efforts of the NZ buys are that little bit better for it, and there's been no account taken of resale and stud deals etc.

It's a list based simply on what they cost, and what they've earned on Australian racetracks.

And it's got to give great heart to buyers that can't shop where the hype lives.

Interestingly of the top 10 on this list, all of which returned their owners over a million dollars, none are by a stallion ranked in the top 10 on the sires list.

Australia has tremendous prizemoney by world standards and outstanding opportunity for an above average racehorse to earn good money for its connections, and it continues to improve with New South Wales getting a sizeable boost into the new season courtesy of the racefields legislation and the potential for that to flow into other states.

This list shows these "most fun" racehorses have been sourced from a whole range of sales but mostly those below the top rung; Inglis Classic, NZ Select, MM Perth and QTIS 600 are all prominent.

And for some the fun continues with the likes of Buffering, for some the fun is over, and in the case of the top performer, Pinker Pinker (pictured), the fun turned to heartbreak with the mare meeting an early tragic demise.

Overall though it's proof positive you can find genuinely good value at the value sales and the budget buyer with a bit of nous has as much, if not more, hope of racetrack return than the top drawer trumps.

So you've got about six months to save up for next year when the fun starts all over again.
