Firebolt Salutes In Tattersalls Mile
Mark Smith - Saturday, 23 June 2012

New Zealand-bred gelding Firebolt spreads his stakes wins twelve months apart and it was his time again in Saturday's the $100,000 Listed Tattersall's Racing Club Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm but he needed to win it on the track and the stewards room.

Formerly trained by Roger James, Firebolt won the Group 2 Shannon Stakes at Rosehill in 2010 and the Group 3 BRC Lord Mayors Cup last year.

The 6yo gelding was transferred to Chris Waller twelve months ago. He finished third in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup at Rosehill on may 12 before finishing third in Doomben's version of the Lord Mayors Cup (G3) a week later. He prepped for the Tattersalls Mile with a second behind Solzhenitsyn in the Listed Strawberry Road Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman, Firebolt held on to defeat the fast-finishing defeated Jetset Lad (Elusive City) by a short-half-head with Listen Son (Big Jesse) a short-neck away in third.

Ric McMahon on the runner-up lodged an objection for alleged interference at the top of the straight, which was thrown out by the stewards.

"He's a consistent galloper, he's been racing really well and he deserved it," Bowman told Sky Racing World.

"He's come along way. We've really been working on settling him and he's been a bit unlucky in a couple of races but at least he's racing consistently well now.

"This guy deserved a win and I'm happy for him."

A 6yo son of Stravinsky (USA), Firebolt moves his overall record to 9 wins, 7 seconds and 5 thirds from 40 starts for earnings of $498,738.

The homebred is out of the Woodman mare Woodsong a daughter of the 1997 Railway Handicap (G1) winner Kailey (Festal).

After not having a foal for three years, Woodsong produced a Pins filly last year. She was covered by Stravinsky (USA) but when she came up negative she was served by the Galileo stallion Rip Van Winkle (Ire).
