'Bush Bred and Tough as Nails'
Tara Madgwick - Saturday, 9 June 2012

That was the quote on under-rated three year-old Riziz, who beat his more fancied rivals to win the Listed VRC AR Creswick stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

Adelaide trainer Ken Sweeney rarely travels horses to Victoria but his latest hit-run raid paid off when Riziz fought on gamely to win the 1200 metre sprint by half a length over Zamorar and Lady Melksham.

Sweeney used to split his team betweenMorphettville and Flemington before making Adelaide his sole base.

Sweeney's representative, son Paul, said the stable's last Melbourne winner may have been more than seven years ago when Social Glow won the Listed Christmas Handicap on Boxing Day 2004.

"It (Sweeney's last Melbourne win) would be a long time ago, probably a horse like Social Glow or Identifiable but he doesn't come over here very often, unless he can win," Paul Sweeney said.

Sweeney said the trainer sent Riziz across from Adelaide as a test run for a possible spring or summer campaign in Melbourne later this year.

"Ken is planning for the spring and about Christmas races so this was a bit of a trial," Sweeney said. "He has come through very well.

"He is just tough as nails. He's a bush-bred horse and he's just tough."

Riziz won the Listed SAJC Adelaide Guineas over 1600 metres at his last start and has the overall record of four wins and four placings from 10 starts with prizemoney of $217,300.

Riziz was bred by the Sweeney's and retained to race and is the first stakes-winner from metropolitan winning Covetous mare Priya, who comes from the family of Group I VATC Oakleigh Plate winner Dantelah.

Riziz is one of three stakes-winners by Zariz(pictured) , who stands at Kooringal Stud at Wagga and covered 114 mares last spring.

His fee for 2012 is $5,500.
