Anthony Freedman is enjoying a successful Brisbane carnival and he struck again with the 2yo colt Boban who became Bernardini's first southern hemisphere stakes-winner with a runaway victory in Saturday's Listed The Phoenix Stakes (1350m) at Doomben.
A troubled tenth in the Hampden Stakes (G3) at Doomben on May 12, Boban earned his trip to Brisbane with a strong win over 1400 metres at Sandown.
Coming from
well back in the field under Hugh Bowman, Boban overpowered the favourite Hoss
Amour by two and a quarter lengths with Regular (Meras) a half-length back in
third.
"Inside the 350 [metres] it was just a case of getting room," Bowman told Sky Racing World.
"I was chopping all over their heels but when I got him out and got him balanced he reeled them in in a matter of strides.
"When he got to the front he got a bit lost and wanted to wander but he is certainly one to follow."
Bowman said Bobin would be an ideal candidate for the Group I T J Smith Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 9.
"Get him over the road [Eagle Farm] and he'll be more suited there," he said. "Switch him off and he'll be hard to beat."
All sale ring regulars would be familiar with Boban's dam Kenbelle. The AJC Oaks (G1 winning daughter of Kemnare has yearlings sell in 2000 (colt by Danehill), 2001 (f by Royal Academy), 2002 (c by Danehill) 2003, (f by Danehill), 2004 (c by Grand Lodge), 2005 (weanling filly by Danzero), 2007 (f by Tale Of The Cat), 2008 (c by Elusive Quality) and 2010 (c by Elusive Quality).
But it took her tenth foal, a $100,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale, to open Kenbelle's stakes account.
As can be seen by the number of progeny to go through the sales ring, Kenbelle has been a most reliable producer. She missed for just the second time in her career in 2009, however she has a weanling filly by Teofilo (Ire) and was bred back to Epsom Derby winner Authorized last spring.
It was an important milestone for Darley Stud's striking stallion Bernardini (USA) who is shaping as an important stallion in North America . Boban becomes his 15th stakes-winner worldwide.
Bernardini stands the upcoming season at Daley Kelvinside at a fee of $55,000.
