With the majority of service fees heading south once again next season, one of the few who will have an increase is Ad Valorem (USA).
The son of Danzig had his busiest season in 2011 covering 138 mares at a fee of $11,000. That will be bumped up to $16,500 at Darley Kelvinside this spring. His stocks were given at boost at Hawkesbury on Saturday when his sons Free Wheeling and Pied A Terre fought out the finish of the Listed Blacktown Workers Hawkesbury Schweppes Guineas (1400m).
Last season Free Wheeling looked among the most promising two-year olds in training when he won the Group 2 Champagne Classic at Doomben. At his next start in the QTC Sires Produce Stakes (G2) he reared in the barriers and took no part. Sent for a spell he reappeared with disappointing performances in the Royal Sovereign Stakes and Hobartville stakes (G2) before an improving fourth in the Phar Lap Stakes (G2).
Discounted by punters, Free Wheeling was sent off a $26 chance in the Hawkesbury Guineas, which was expected to be little more than a walk in the park for the undefeated Landing (More Than Ready). However Landing failed to strike a blow while Hugh Bowman sent Free Wheeling to an all out drive at the top of the straight and he never looked in danger.
Pied A Terre had been a most consistent performer for Darley in Melbourne winning the Autumn Stakes (G2) and finishing second in the Blamey Stakes (G2). He set out after Free Wheeling but could get no closer than four lengths.
Trainer Peter Snowden said it was a welcome return to form by Free Wheeling.
"He's been a bit disappointing this time in, wet tracks, one thing or another, so no it's good to get him over the line," he said.
Snowden said Free Wheeling will head to Brisbane with the Group 2 Queensland Guineas the target.
The Darley homebred is the fourth foal of the Last Tycoon mare Miss Carefree a half-sister to the dam of Hydrometer who was ridden by a young Kerrin McEvoy when second to Helenus in the VRC Derby (G1).
A great granddaughter of the champion mare Toltrice, Miss Carefree was sold by Darley to Damian White Bloodstock in 2009 for $9,500. The Henny Hughes colt she was carrying at the time failed to make her $20,000 reserve at the 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling sale.
Miss Carefree has a weanling colt by Real Saga and was bred back to the Street Cry stallion Globetrotter (USA) last year.
