First
season sire, Magnus, has now produced three winners (plus two seconds and two
fourths) from seven runners in the past fortnight.
The newest banner bearer is the lightning quick first starter, Kolonga, who led
for most of the journey before scoring a convincing victory in the opening
event at Caulfield today: enhanced by a field which included last start
Caulfield winner Frupper.
Bred by Matt Brown's Monterey Stud, Kolonga (pictured as a yearling) is trained by Matt Ellerton and Simon
Zahra.
She was sold as a weanling for $25,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale and successfully pinhooked by Springbank Horse Farm into the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale where she was consigned by Phoenix Broodmare Farm and fetched $75,000 to the bid of Northwood Park.
Hailing from the multiple winning Dehere mare, Deputy Dehere – a half sister to
stakes winner Strabane – Kolonga is (from what we can gather) named after a
Tongan village.
Kolonga's win was timely given that it was on the same day as The Galaxy at
Randwick, the Sydney Group One sprint that was taken out by her sire five years
ago.
Magnus now has three winners and three stakes horses from just eight runners.
