The
Group I VRC Victoria Derby might have come too soon for promising young stayer
Gamblin' Guru, but the Group I SAJC Derby looms large on his horizon following
a tenacious win in the Listed SAJC Port Adelaide Guineas at Morphettville on
Saturday.
A $70,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase from the draft of Mill Park, Gamblin'
Guru won the Listed Geelong Classic in the spring before being sent for a spell
and hit top form in the 1800 metre contest to win by half a head.
Prepared by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, Gamblin' Guru beat Tupac Amaru
when winning his previous stakes race at Geelong and that horse came out and
ran second in the Group I ATC Australian Derby to Criterion at Randwick, so his
SA Derby credentials look strong.
A son of English Derby winner New Approach (IRE), Gamblin' Guru has won three
races and placed five times from 13 starts earning over $223,000 in prizemoney.
Bred by the Guru Breeding Syndicate, Gamblin' Guru is the second foal and
second winner from unraced Glory Guru, a half-sister by Fusaichi Pegasus (USA)
to triple Group I winner and Champion Australian 3YO Gold Guru and Group II
winner Gallant Guru.
Glory Guru had no yearling for the sales this year, but has a colt foal by Al
Maher and was covered last spring by Medaglia D'Oro (USA).
Gamblin' Guru was the second leg of a stakes-winning double for Mill Park graduates
following on from an earlier victory for Go Indy Go in the Group III SAJC Sires
Produce Stakes.
