Rediener Makes Winning Return in Bill Ritchie Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday September 16

After closing out his 3-year-old season with a bang, the Redoute’s Choice gelding Rediener announced himself as a lightweight Epsom Hcp hope when winning the Group III Bill Ritchie Hcp (1400m) at Randwick.

Ridden by Kathy O’Hara for Chris Waller, Rediener was first-up since winning the Group III Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm in June.

Given the run of the race behind pacesetters Tamerlane and Wild Planet, Rediener was out of the pocket at the 200m, proved one and a quarter lengths too good for the ageless 8yo Casino Prince gelding Cuban Royale, with Wild Planest (Animal Kingdom) a half-length back in third.

With his second Group III victory, Rediener advances his record to five wins, two seconds, and two thirds with earnings of $464,100.

“It was a good start today. He’s quite an assuming horse at home, he doesn’t enthuse you with confidence, but he trialled really well and I think there was some form out of that trial earlier today,” Waller said.

“He was given a perfect ride from Kathy, pushed his way out and won like a good horse.

“He did a great job at the end of the autumn, including winning in Queensland, a group race. He’s come back well, and who knows, whether it is an Epsom or the Alan Brown the following week, a $1.5million 1400m race.”

“I guess weigh up where he fits in with our others and make sure Kathy’s available.”

A three-quarter brother to Snitzel, Rediener is a homebred for Neil Werrett and partners. He is a brother to stakes-placed Redoutable Heart and a half to Listed winner Rathlin (Fastnet Rock) and stakes-placed Za Zi Ba (All Too Hard).

He is the tenth winner from as many to race out of the stakes-placed Weiner (More Than Ready), a daughter of the outstanding matron Snippets’ Lass.

Besides Snitzel, Snippets’ Lass is the dam of Group III AJC Skyline Stakes winner and successful stallion Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) and Group III SAJC Janz Stakes winner Viennese (Redoute’s Choice).

Weiner has an unraced 3yo filly by the Autumn Sun named La Belle Vie, a $200,000 Inglis Easter Yearling. Also trained by Chris Waller, La Belle Vie impressed with a second in a barrier trial at Randwick in June.

Weiner died in April last year. Her final foal is a yearling colt by Fastnet Rock.
