Uncle Bryn Storms to Victory in Cranbourne Cup

Mark Smith - Saturday November 12

Seven days after finishing fifth in the $2million Five Diamonds at Rosehill, Uncle Bryn (GB)) came with a barnstorming finish to claim the $500,000 Listed Ladbrokes Cranbourne Cup (1600m).

The Busuttin and Young stable originally intended to rely on stablemate Flash Aah, but Uncle Bryn (GB) pulled up so well he took his place.

On a great day for Seymour Bloodstock and partners and jockey Mark Zahra, the 5yo son of Sea The Stars lowered the course record in defeating Callsign Mav (Atlante) by two lengths with Visinari (FR) (Dark Angel) a further one and a quarter lengths back in third.

The winner of the Listed Sale Cup on October 23, Uncle Bryn (GB) advances his record to six wins, two seconds, and two thirds from 16 starts with earnings of $663,918.

“I was giggling when they were steaming along in front,” Zahra said.

“I was a fair way off them, but I was really travelling. I could hear everyone around me starting to go for their horse, and I hadn’t even moved.

“I pulled him out because Callsign Mav was taking me nowhere, and I thought ‘I’ve got everything covered.’ We hit the front at the top of the straight, but I didn’t want to disappoint him, and it was over a long way out.

“I reckon a mile is his trip, and if he was set for a mile I think he could win (a Group 1) for sure”

Part-owner Mark Pilkington said the Cranbourne Cup had special meaning for the ownership group.

“Great for the guys to win their hometown Cup; he’s a promising horse,” he said.

“The prize money here in Victoria is great; you can take your time and hopefully consolidate your horse for the future.”

A 130,000gns purchase for Blandford Bloodstock from the Chasemore Farm consignment at the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Uncle Bryn (GB) was a talented performer for John and Thady Gosden.  He won three of his six starts in Britain and placed in the Listed Blue Ribband Trial at Epsom.

A half-brother to the Group III Goodwood Prestige Stakes winner Boomer (Kingman), Uncle Bryn (GB) is one of four winners from as many to race out of the stakes-placed Singspiel mare Wall Of Sound.

Wall Of Sound is a half-sister to Group III John of Gaunt Stakes winner The Cheka (Xaar).
