Godolphin Stalwart Cascadian in a Class of his Own in Hill Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday October 1

Godolphin's magnificent servant Cascadian (GB) took his prizemoney past the $5,000,000 barrier, turning the $1,000,000 Group II Fujitsu General  Hill Stakes (2000m) into a three-and-a-quarter length romp.

Ridden by James McDonald for James Cummings, the 8yo son of New Approach revelled in the heavy going to defeat Numerian (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor) with the favourite Montefilia (Kermadec), who was on tired legs in the final 200m, a further four lengths back in third.

With his first win from three starts at 2000m, Cascadian (GB) advances his record to nine wins, five seconds, and seven thirds from 41 starts, with earnings of $5,159,575.

Stable representative Darren Beadman said Cascadian enjoys being back in Sydney.

"Melbourne’s great but Osborne (Park) is just the bee’s knees as far as bringing him back to an area that he likes and is really au fait with the operation there,” Beadman said.

“It was perfect. He’s an eight-year-old, and he’s still got six cylinders.”

“James rode him to get the 2000m, didn’t panic, trusted the horse.

“He had a lot of horse coming to the corner and had the right horse to drag him into the race and got back onto the nicer ground in the home straight. Good, solid performance from a very honest, worthy galloper.”

“There are some nice races for him. James said there’s the Craven Plate for him next start, back to 1800. Both runs have been great. He came here a fresh horse.”

Cascadian (GB) is a half-brother to three winners, including Albahr, winner of the Grade 1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine.

The son of Epsom Derby hero New Approach is out of the talented Street Cry (IRE) mare Falls Of Lora, whose four wins included the Group III UAE Oaks and the Listed Distaff Stakes at Sandown.

Falls Of Lora was one of four stakes-winners for Danehill's stakes-winning daughter Firth Of Lorne, runner-up in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.
