Chain Of Lightning Makes it Five for Five in Cockram Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday August 27

Two four-year-olds with perfect four-for-four records went toe to toe in Saturday’s Group III WW Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, and the outsider prevailed.

The 4yo Fighting Sun mare Chain Of Lightning arrived at the Peter Moody stable with wins at Inverell and Armidale. The Stuart Ramsay homebred added wins at Caulfield and Flemington before her triumph in the Cockram.

The previously undefeated Passive Aggressive led with 100m left to run, but the $500,000 Fastnet Rock mare was running on empty and missed a place.

With Jamie Kah in the saddle, Chain Of Lightning defeated She’s All Class (I Am Invincible) by one and a quarter lengths with a further three-quarter of a length back to Kissonallfourcheeks (Written Tycoon) in third.

Assistant trainer Katherine Coleman said they knew they had something special on their hands.

She’s continued to improve, but the ability she’s shown us at home, we thought this is the sort of level she can get to if not further. She’s a pretty special horse,” Coleman said.

“My heart is beating so hard after that. That was really special to see and to still be undefeated now, five wins from five starts, is just really special.

“She’s  such a beautiful mare to have around the stable. She was so well-educated when she came to us. She’s been a pleasure to have around and is just so easy to do anything with and you see that in her races. She’s just so tractable, we can put her wherever we want, and she’s still finishing off that way.

“She’s a real credit to her early trainers and also just a massive thanks to the Ramsey family for giving us the opportunity to train her. We’re very lucky and very appreciative.

“We’ve got no particular target in mind with her, we’ll just see how she comes through and pick our way through, but she’s a very exciting horse.”

Chain Of Lightning is the best of two winners from as many to race for the winning Perugino mare Magic Art.

Magic Art

A daughter of the Group III Magic Night stakes winner Mardi’s Magic (Kenny’s Best Pal), Magic Art was recently sold at the Inglis July (Late) Online Sale for $3,250 when in foal to Better Land.

Chain Of Lightning is the fourth stakes-winner for Fighting Sun (Northern Meteor), who died in 2020 after leaving six crops.

Blue Light Enhances Breeding Success
For successful breeding outcomes, timing is everything. The horse’s natural reproductive period coincides with the light-filled days of summer. As seasonal breeders, the naturally lengthening days of spring suppress melatonin and in turn stimulate reproductive hormones that maximise fertility for both mares and stallions.
