Snitzel Colt Best Of Bordeaux Enters Golden Slipper Picture

Mark Smith - Saturday January 29

There was plenty of money to suggest that Queenslander Best Of Bordeaux would be hard to beat in Saturday’s Group III Fujitsu General Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill, and the son of Snitzel simply ran his rivals ragged.

With Sam Clipperton in the saddle, the Kacy Fogden-trained debutant was given a rev up from the barriers. He found the lead with ease and had the 5-horse field well spaced out after going four hundred metres.

Keeping up a strong gallop, the son of Snitzel defeated Godolphin’s Lonhro colt Rakomelo by with the $1million Not A Single Doubt colt Flashing Steal in third.

It is back to the drawing board for Chris Waller and his $1.4million I Am Invincible colt Great Barrier Reef who struggled in to fourth after having every chance.

Fogden said Best Of Bordeaux had displayed scintillating speed on the track.

“It’s very exciting. I was a bit worried as I thought he may have been over racing, but he stuck to his task and did it nicely,” Fogden said.

“He travelled down to Gerald’s (Ryan) last week and settled in so well. He is a real gentleman.

“Sam rode him perfectly and he was full of running. It’s fantastic to get one like this (for Aquis) and at this time of year too.”

Bred and part-owned by Gerry Harvey, Best Of Bordeaux was a $425,000 purchase by Kacy Fogden Racing from the Baramul Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Carrying the colours of the Fung family’s Aquis Stud, Best Of Bordeaux is the second foal of the handy racemare Chateau Cheval, one of nine winners for Baramul Stud’s amazing servant Lady Capel.

A stakes-placed daughter of Last Tycoon, Lady Capel is the dam of Group 1 winner and successful stallion Casino Prince, Group III winner Tagus, and Listed winner Lord of The Land and Metallurgical.

A half-sister to Palia and Just Awesome, Lady Capel is also the dam of Lady Paget the dam of Group 1 JJ Atkins Plate winner Prince Fawaz.

Chateau Cheval missed in 2019 and 202. She was covered by Written Tycoon last spring.

It has been a productive couple of days for Snitzel’s two-year-olds after Sandpaper won on debut at Canterbury on Friday.
