Glenlogan Park's promising young sire Rothesay
registered his 6th individual winner from his first crop when Enigma Machine
created a big impression in New Zealand on Wednesday by winning first time out
for trainer Ben Foote.
The Rothesay colt, unbeaten in two trials appearances leading into today, lived
right up to his robust reputation with a convincing and comfortable victory
over the unsuitably short distance of 800m.
Confidently ridden by Leith Innes, Enigma Machine sat just behind the speed
before cruising into contention at the top of the straight and then putting his
rivals away with a fair bit in hand as they came to the line.
Foote has long held a massive opinion of his Rothesay youngster and will now
put him away for a while with bigger targets in mind.
"I've always really liked the horse and said from very early on that I think he
is potentially the best I have ever had," Foote said. "Normally a horse like
this, especially one I own, would have been sold overseas by now but I've
decided to back my judgement and we're going to hold on to him.
"He did everything we wanted from him today and we will now pop him out for a
freshen up before bringing him back for the big 3YO spring races.
"I know he will be better as he gets older and as the distances increase, but
when they run their final 600m in 33.09 seconds and he has come off the pace to
beat them like he did today then that only gives me more confidence."
Rothesay has really started to gain some momentum in recent times and will have
two runners attempting to become his first Group performers this week when In
His Stride and Shadow Lawn both line up in the $250,000 Group II BRC Sires Produce Stakes at Doomben.
