It
was business as usual in the Group I English 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket
overnight with Coolmore's blue-blooded Galileo colt Gleneagles dominating the
first Classic of the European season to race clear and win as he pleased.
Making his first appearance for 2015 following a brilliant juvenile season that
saw him win five of six starts, albeit losing one of those wins in the Group I Jean-Luc
Lagardere in France on protest, the Aidan O'Brien trained Gleneagles was in a
class of his own.
Gleneagles travelled well for Ryan Moore off the pace and when asked to go
forward did so with an electric turn of foot.
He maintained his advantage to the post to beat the big field of 18 by two and a quarter lengths with Godolphin's Darley homebred Territories, a son of Invincible
Spirit, in second place.
"He's a great traveller and has a lot of speed. He was always very good
and quickens very well," said O'Brien said.
"Ryan said they couldn't lead him and he ended up getting there early. The big
thing about him is pace - he's always shown it."
It was the seventh win in this race for Aidan O'Brien, but his first with a son
of champion sire Galileo.
"I'm delighted, but a lot of people put in a lot of work along the line.
It's a massive team effort," he said.
Gleneagles is a full brother to Group I winner Marvellous and is the second winner
for Group II winning Storm Cat mare You'resothrilling, a full sister to
Coolmore's champion racehorse and now champion sire Giant's Causeway.
Giant's Causeway was second in the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas races before
going on to be European Horse of the Year in 2000.
