He
was a leading contender for the tag of 'Australia's best maiden' until today
when he shed the despised label at Ballarat.
Duporth three year-old Cornrow was good enough to finish third in the Group I
MRC Blue Diamond Stakes and ATC Sires Produce Stakes last year, but a win
proved elusive.
Disappointing form in the spring led to a decision to geld the good looking
colt and it was a new look Cornrow that stepped out for Mick Price in the 1200
metre maiden.
Ridden by Damien Oliver, Cornrow travelled sweetly just behind the leaders and
when asked to move up three wide on the turn he sped clear to win by a length and
a half as a hot favourite.
It might have been the first win for Cornrow in 11 starts, but he's won over
$280,000 in prizemoney and now that he has broken the ice it might well be
onwards and upwards.
A $170,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Kitchwin Hills draft, Cornrow is the
first foal of stakes-winning Exceed and Excel mare Baby Corn.
Kitchwin Hills will offer a full brother to Cornrow at the 2015 Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 296.
