Promising young sire Manhattan Rain had runners in both the Group I VRC Victoria Derby and Oaks last year, so connections of lightly raced filly Ondina are entitled to be optimistic about her future after a tenacious win at Randwick on Wednesday.

Ondina as a yearlingPrepared by Gai Waterhouse and sporting the purple and white stars of Star Thoroughbreds, Ondina led throughout in her first attempt at 1600 metres, fighting on strongly to win by a short neck, her second win from just four starts.

A bargain $40,000 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale purchase for Star Thoroughbreds from the Tyreel Stud draft, Ondina is a half-sister to smart Melbourne winner Holy Cow from the stakes-placed Irish import Mermaid Island (IRE), a half-sister to Group Irish Thousand Guineas winner Nightime.

Entered for the Group I ATC Australian Oaks, Ondina is another progressive winner for Arrowfield Stud's Manhattan Rain, who is quietly racking up the winners and is second to only I Am Invincible on the Australian Second Season Sires List by winners.

A half-brother to champion sire Redoute's Choice, Manhattan Rain has nine entries for Inglis Premier and 10 for Inglis Easter.
