Promising
young sire Manhattan Rain had runners in both the Group I VRC Victoria Derby
and Oaks last year, so connections of lightly raced filly Ondina are entitled
to be optimistic about her future after a tenacious win at Randwick on
Wednesday.
Prepared by Gai Waterhouse and sporting the purple and white stars of Star
Thoroughbreds, Ondina led throughout in her first attempt at 1600 metres,
fighting on strongly to win by a short neck, her second win from just four
starts.
A bargain $40,000 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale purchase for Star
Thoroughbreds from the Tyreel Stud draft, Ondina is a half-sister to smart
Melbourne winner Holy Cow from the stakes-placed Irish import Mermaid Island
(IRE), a half-sister to Group Irish Thousand Guineas winner Nightime.
Entered for the Group I ATC Australian Oaks, Ondina is another progressive winner
for Arrowfield Stud's Manhattan Rain, who is quietly racking up the winners and
is second to only I Am Invincible on the Australian Second Season Sires List by
winners.
A half-brother to champion sire Redoute's Choice, Manhattan Rain has nine
entries for Inglis Premier and 10 for Inglis Easter.
