Brilliant
filly Fontiton kept her unbeaten record intact when surging clear for an
impressive win in the Group II MRC Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield on
Saturday.
Stepping out to 1100 metres, she finished with a rush to win by a length and
three-quarters clocking1:02.83 seconds in running faster time than the colts
division that followed.
"She keeps stepping up and I've always thought she will be better over further,
so she was terrific today," said her trainer Robert Smerdon.
A $110,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Matchem Racing from the Blue Gum Farm
draft, Fontiton has won three from three earning $391,750 in prizemoney so has
been a great investment for her big group of owners.
Fontiton was the most expensive yearling from the second crop of dual Group I
winner Turffontein and is the best of three winners from stakes-winning Rubiton
mare Personal Ensign.
Personal Ensign has a yearling filly and filly foal by Canford Cliffs (IRE) and
was not surprisingly covered by Turffontein again last spring.
Fontiton is bred on the same cross as Turffontein's only other stakes-winner
Fontein Ruby, who is also trained by Robert Smerdon and resumed from a spell
with a good third in the Group III MRC Kevin Hayes Stakes.
Turffontein has 10 entries for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in March and
three for the Magic Millions in Adelaide.
