It did not come without a fight though.
After losing ground when jumping in when the barriers opened, the daughter of Turffontein needed to dig deep to defeat a stubborn Haybah (More Than Ready) by a neck with Pursuits (Lonhro) one and three-quarters of a length back in third.
Stuart Webb, stable foreman for winning trainer Robert Smerdon, said Fontiton was nowhere near wound up and would improve enormously from the run.
If you look at that at the furlong she cruised up and was going to win by two, Webb said.
Winning rider Mark Zahra said there was plenty of merit in the win.
"She jumped up in the air a little bit," Zahra said.
"It was all right. She got in behind them, which is what we wanted today, and she relaxed well.
"I wanted to make a good thing of it so I came out when I had the chance. I reckon she'd nearly had enough 100 out but class prevailed in the end.
"I reckon she peaked a little bit by the post but she wasn't going to let that other horse come back and beat her."
Webb said he expects Fontiton will run in the Group II Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies on February 14.
Fontiton (pictured as a yearling) was a $110,000 purchase by Matchem Racing from the Blue Gum Farm consignment at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling sale.
She is the fifth foal of the stakes-winning Rubiton mare Personal Ensign who placed in the Group II VRC Age Classic.
Personal Ensign has a 2yo filly and yearling filly by 5-time Group 1 winner Canford Cliffs (IRE) and was bred back to Turffontein last spring.
