Winner of last year's Listed Sandown Cup when trained by Peter
Chapple-Hyam, Caravan Rolls On has had a quiet time of it of late under the
care of new trainer Danny O'Brien.
The 7yo son of Hernando was making just his third start of
the year in Wednesday's Group III Geelong Cup (2400m) but he proved too strong
for Marksmanship (IRE) and Like A
Carousel. (photo Darryl Sherer).
It was the fifth win in the race for Williams who scored on
Dunaden in 2011 before that horse won the Melbourne Cup.
Caravan Rolls On races for the same connections, Sheikh
Fahad al-Thani's Qatar Bloodstock.
Currently 45th in line for a Melbourne Cup, Caravan Rolls On start will likely need a
penalty.
"I'd hope he gets a penalty," O'Brien told TVN.
"The horse (Big Memory) that won the Herbert Power (Stakes) got a 2kg
penalty and it was a similar standard of race today.
"If he gets a penalty of that nature, he'll be in the
Cup and getting to Flemington, getting to the two miles, that's his aim and he
would be a top six chance for sure."
Bred by Kirsten Rausing, Caravan Rolls On is a son of
Hernando who died of a heart attack last at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket,
England.
A Niarchos family homebred, Hernando won seven of 20 starts
including the 1993 Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) and the Prix
Lupin.
A son of Nininski, Hernando is out of the Group 3 winning
Miswaki mare Whakilyric, who also left the Group 1 winner Johann Quatz and
stakes-winner winner Res Judicata who both stood with limited success at stud
in Australia.
The dam of Caravan Rolls On, All Grain (Polish Precedent), is
a sister to Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks winner Pure Grain and to the dam of
Japanese Group 1 winner Fine Grain.
