New Home for Primus

Media Release - Thursday August 21
Sons of champion sire Flying Spur have been churning out winners with Casino Prince, Jet Spur and Magnus all proving successful which makes us wonder what has happened to another of his winner producing sons in Primus.

PrimusA multiple Group I placed Group III winner, Primus was a high class performer for the John O'Shea stable earning over $520,000 in prizemoney during a 17 start career that yielded four wins highlighted by the Group III Tramway Handicap, Listed AJC Show County Quality and Listed Ming Dynasty Quality, as well as six minor placings.

Competitive with the best of his generation, Primus was third to God's Own and Paratroopers in the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas, third to Hotel Grand in the Group I AJC Randwick Guineas and third to De Beers in the Group I STC Rosehill Guineas.

Primus showed all of the quality that is the hallmark of his female family, which is acclaimed as one of the best in Australia with his third dam being legendary producer and racemare Denise's Joy.

This celebrated dynasty has produced not only champions such as More Joyous, but also a champion sire in Thorn Park.

Retired to Chatswood Stud in Victoria, Primus sired smart metropolitan winner Apollo Creed in his first crop and has since left 45 winners of $1.55 million with three winners in the past month in Prime Quest (Sunshine Coast), Frenzy Fox (Murtoa) and Burning Front (Geelong).

In addition to winners in New Zealand, Singapore and Macau, Primus left 10 individual three year-old winners in Australia last season led by Burning Front, who has won three of 12 starts for John McArdle earning over $85,000 in prizemoney.

A last start winner at Geelong, he is entered for another race there next Tuesday.

"I bred Apollo Creed and Burning Front, so when the opportunity came up to buy Primus it seemed like a good idea," said Justin Lovatt, a former Stallion Manager at Swettenham and Chatswood Stud, where he was introduced to Primus.

"He's a magnificent looking horse and the winners are starting to come for him, particularly since the start of the year, so we thought he was well worth the gamble."

Primus is standing at Southglen Stud near Grafton in New South Wales with Cathy Chapman at a fee of $2,200.
